Where it all Began
As a young child, my Mother was the instigator of my love for books. Some people say you can pass on family curses but I was blessed with a family who passed on good things.
My fondest memories are from when my Mom would take us kids to the library. I really felt like a grown up when I was allowed to have my first library card at the age of 5.
“How long would it take for me to read all the books on the shelves?”, I always wondered. This is a good question to ask the guy on the Numbers t.v. show. What exactly is the probability that I could read every book before I died? Hmmmm! Well as a kid I tried my hardest. We were able to keep the books for two weeks. My Mom tried desperately to get me to check out only one or two. In her wisdom she would say, “Michelle, put all those books back. You can’t read all those before they are due.”
I was such a compliant child, not!
“Yes, I will. Let me take them, Mom, please!”
After a huge tug of war verbally my Mom would let me have all the books in my hands. I would read as fast as I could so I would be right and after a while my Mom got used to me taking piles of books home.
The books I remember most from my early childhood were the stories of Babar the Elephant and The Wizard of Oz series.
So where are your reading roots? Tell us about where you got your start. Also, what were your favorites?
I know this isn’t a forum but we can start one if you’re interested. Just leave me a message and we can get started.
Thanks for sharing.

The only thing my mom read were harlequin romances. My family was always telling me I was going to go blind from reading so much, but they still waited patiently for me to finish up in the bookstore, and managed to get every book on my list at Christmas every year, lol.
Some of my earliest favorites were always the Dr. Seuss collection when I was really little (along with Richard Scarry) and my first real book, I must have read it 100 times was A Little Princess. That book made me cry every single time!!

I read tons when I was in elementary school. I remember being so proud when I finished The Little House on the Praire Books. I then at some point moved on to The Babysitter’s Club which I just devoured. I was always reading!
